Position Paper

As a country Syria became independent in 1946, but soon experienced military coups. Then Syria united with Egypt, but split to form the Syrian Arab Republic. Recently under the leader Bashar al-Assad, there recently seems to be unrest over the emergency laws we installed. This has caused the government to frequently clash with oppositionists over the recent years causing a loss of both the country and it’s people. This is only made worse with the sanctions placed by the U.S and other countries. The Syrian delegation believe that the Global Goal sixteen, which advocates for peaceful communities, should be pursued. By getting rid of these oppositionist and terrorist groups, Syria can reconstruct the country for its people.

As a result of the desolation that ISIS and other terror groups have caused, the economy of Syria is not what it used to be. The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, otherwise known as ISIS, has taken control of over 12 Syrian cities and 13,000 square miles (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/08/11/isis-iraq-numbers_n_5659239.htm) in Northern and Eastern Syria and Iraq. Such cities include, Raqqa, and Abu Kamal in Syria and the capital of Iraq, Baghdad, is in ISIS controlled area (http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-24179084). The main way ISIS gets their money is by the oil fields in their controlled areas. They collect it and sell it back to the Syrian government. The possession of potential economic areas is very detrimental to the well-being of Syria. The GDP of Syria as of 2011 is $107.6 billion with 11.9% of people below the poverty line in 2006, according to the CIA Factbook (https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/sy.html ). The GDP was $110.1 billion in 2010, proving that the war caused destruction has lowered the total worth value and production of the country.

The possibility of advancement upon other important Syrian cities like Damascus, the capital, could be very destructive on not just the economy, but the entire country itself.

While responsible for the damaged buildings and other constructs, these oppositionists also possessing a negative social aspect of our country. Thus by eradicating any trace of these oppositionists we not only can we be closer to our chosen global goal we can also provide beneficial social impact on our citizens and even other nations as well. For example one such oppositionist groups; Isis has had a negative impact on our country socially. According to (http://www.washingtoninstitute.org/policy-analysis/view/isis-iraq-and-the-war-in-syria-military-outlook) Isis can convince other oppositionists in our country to expand and continue their destructive ways. In other words Isis is not only posing a direct problem to us but is rapidly changing the atmosphere and nature of our country.  This only more evident when discovering the support that ISIS receives. This only becomes more evident when according to the week (http://www.theweek.co.uk/islamic-state/64120/how-many-foreign-fighters-have-joined-islamic-state) by 2015, 600 Britains alone have joined Isis. Furthermore the social views these oppositionists hold destroys the harmonic and jubilant dream of peace and equality.  According to CNN (http://www.cnn.com/2015/06/11/opinions/bangura-isis-treatment-women/) based on age and sexual activity, women are sold like cattle, impeded by the cumbersome and oppressive shackles of fear and slavery. The worst part is that this is just one of the horrific and overbearing views that ISIS and by extension their supporters encourage. Another view they support is the preconception that Shia are heretics and meant to be slaughtered. These types of view are the very views that are our ultimate enemy in the way of peace: superiority. This is only made worse by one incident in which 679 Shia’s were shot leaving only a handful alive. As a result the  (http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/aug/25/isis-ethnic-cleansing-shia-prisoners-iraq-mosul)

ambassadors of Syria believe the views and the actions of Isis and other like minded rebels must see the error of their ways in order to pave the unyielding road of peace for generations to come.

Thirdly ISIS is being financed by other countries such as Saudi Arabia. Apparently they were funded by Obama administration according to http://shoebat.com/2015/02/20/isis-leader-admits-funded-obama-administration/. Also ISIS has recruiters being paid to have people join ISIS for $600. Furthermore ISIS was paid a large amount of money to release hostages in France giving them more money and by extension power. ISIS is also trying to make a conservative state. This can pose a problem for Syrians due to our decreasing GDP and covering more money can lead to a higher increase in poverty and malnourishment. If we conserve too much then what will be left? Moreover Isis has harsh policies towards others when it come to different religions. Isis has shown in numerous encounters that they will kill in the name of their religion. This core principals eradicates the warm ray of hope and the just scales of equality we strive for.  There are christians syrians in Syria. Lastly we plead to other countries to halt any funding to ISIS immediately. Isis is in war with Syria.Their conflicts began in 2011 according to this article http://theislamicmonthly.com/syrian-alawites-their-history-their-future/.

Despite the oppositionists causing a major block in the path of peace we have been opposing them unyieldingly. According to independant U.K  President Bashar al-Assad’s has (http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-east/syria-conflict-president-assad-finally-turns-on-isis-as-government-steps-up-campaign-against-9679480.html) already been implementing ways to foil the oppositionists. This includes airstrikes against the ISIS headquarters. However other countries such as the U.S have helped us in our efforts. In fact according to new york times due to milita sent by the U.S to help prevent  (http://www.nytimes.com/2015/08/10/world/middleeast/syria-turkey-islamic-state-kurdish-militia-ypg.html?_r=0) Isis, the U.S has become our biggest ally. This leads us to hope that we can continue this good relationship with the united states and our allies. We also hope to gain support from other countries that are striving for peace and justice such as Nigeria and create outstanding relations with countries we may have complications with.

The country and delegation of Syria believes that with the support of other delegations of the United Nations, we should take the offensive and face ISIS and other terror groups head on. The world cannot allow them to take Syrian lands or people any longer. Without the eradication of these groups, Syria cannot pursue other goals that would mean better lives for its people. Secure communities and innovation and infrastructure come after people can return to their homes with confidence that they won’t be shot by an extremist group.

We ask the other delegations to support Syria and the battle against opposition groups with monetary help and political backing. Syria cannot be left on its own. Help and collaboration are essential factors to creating a safe and prosperous country for the Syrians and others across the globe.

Must be 6-8 sentences check echo for what your paragraph must be about

(Delaney)1st paragraph: Pakistan is a country of many things, but also a lack of manythings. The education in Pakistan is one of those lacking factors that people in Pakistan would really benefit from. Between 2000 and 2004, Pakistanis in the age group 55–64 had a literacy rate of almost 38%, those ages 45–54 had a literacy rate of nearly 46%, those 25–34 had a literacy rate of 57%, and those ages 15–24 had a literacy rate of 72% it usually depended on which the sex was. As of 2009 the male education rate it %69 percent and the woman education rate was %45 percent, and this is just ages 10 and up. Over time it has gotten better but the male education rate is still higher than the female education rate. By the primary Net Enrolment Rate (NER)’s estimate of 62%1, over 35% of the population 5 to 9 years of age is not in school Given a population of 5 to 9 years old of some 19.5 million, this means that about 7 million children aged 5 to 9 are out of the education system . Furthermore, under current conditions, the education system does not provide for a substantial percentage of students to move beyond the primary level. At present, the average enrolment per grade at the middle elementary level is less than one-half the average enrolment per grade at the primary level. This is considerably less than that of most other countries, and it is clear that the delivery system needs to significantly increase the proportion of students capable of studying beyond the primary level.

(Uly) 2nd paragraph: Since education is one of the most important goals needed in Pakistan, many actions must be taken to help achieve this goal. In an economical point of view, higher education could lead to more intelligent people, which eventually turns into more and well paying jobs. In order to have more jobs, you need to have more opportunities. With many more intelligent men, there is a greater chance of them smart enough to create their own business or inventions. This can result in thousands of more jobs which can eventually decrease the poverty line of 12.4%. Pakistani Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, says that he vowed that all legislative actions would be taken to protect and grant more rights to women. Right now the enforcement on this hasn’t been great but when it does become more stable, then we can grant education for women which can greatly affect the country. Families will now have an extra source of income which can pay for more necessities and also education for future generations.

(Uly) 3rd paragraph: Pakistan is slightly controlled by the Taliban whether we like it or not. They kill left and right and are selfish in what they want. Being in poverty, Pakistan does not have the necessary resources needed to defend and fight off the Taliban. This is due to the lack of education in our system. There are a small amount of women who are able to find jobs but they are mainly working in factories and sweatshops where they less than minimum wage and under terrible conditions and even end up dying while working. This is due to heavy sexual discrimination to where a woman can get stoned to death just for marrying a man without her family’s consent. Some men do not want change due to tradition but almost every woman is fighting to get equality for all women.

(Ramisha) 4th paragraph:  According to the Global fund for children, 120 to 125 million children are not enrolled in school. According to UNESCO, more than 4.5 million girls are out of school in Pakistan. The state of girl education is far more optimal. There are 7.261 million children out of school and 58% of it are female. Lack of education doesn’t only impact the lives of the children, but the development of the entire nation. If a large population of children are not educated, the future business, marketing, government leaders for many generations of the country will be affected. Uneducated children are more susceptible for victimization and therefore decreases life expectancy. Talibans are a great threat to girl’s education in Pakistan as well. And as stated before, Pakistani government can do very little to fight them due to the limited number of people being educated. The more people gets educated, boys and girls, the more brains will have various ideas to get rid of terrorists in an nation.

(Ramisha) 5th paragraph: By the same token, in Pakistan people like Malala are fighting for the equality for girls education. Malala was symbol of hope for many young girls in Pakistan attending school under difficult circumstances. The government has initiated a number of efforts to bring some improvements in the education, especially participation of girls in primary school. There is EFA (Education For All), and the recent constitutional amendment makes education a fundamental rights for the citizens of Pakistan. The article states , “the State shall provide free and compulsory education to all children of the age of five to sixteen years in such manners as may be determined by the law.” The attack on Malala has cost public reaction, there was protests against the attack, and were being held in different cities in Pakistan. Four thousands students were involved and participated in organized walks and prayers for Malala. The students highlighted the importance of girl’s education and the need to secure a better future for the young girls of Pakistan.

(Delaney) 6th paragraph :

Here are some of the things that we believe should be done to achieve our education goal. Improve, update and form curricula, texts, pedagogy, and examination and evaluation techniques. The government has now fixed better primary education as a national priority, and a new $150 million credit from the International Development Association will help improve schools in one of the areas that needs the most help, the diverse and heavily rural North-West Frontier Province. With this program, all four of Pakistan’s provinces will now have an IDA-backed primary education system in place. Literacy in the province is below 22 percent, 40 percent of kindergartners don’t go on to finish the fifth grade and only 22 percent of schools are girls schools. And severe inequities exist in education between districts, rural and urban areas and between males and females.

The credit will help Pakistan to get more children in-and through-primary schools and to improve the overall quality of their education. The five-year program is expected to increase primary enrollment by about 886,000 new students, more than 40 percent of whom will be girls. Educating girls is a key focus of the project-as it is in most of the Bank’s education work-because worldwide research has shown it to have broad side benefits. It promotes child health and reduced fertility, for example, particularly important given Pakistan’s high population growth rate. Sixty percent of the program’s 23,000 new classrooms will be for girls.

locating schools where there is a community demand for enrollment, consolidating schools with low enrollment;- promoting coeducation schools in receptive communities,

increasing the supply of female teachers by training and recruiting women;- subsidizing private schools catering to low-income areas and rural girls.

The project will also improve the learning environment by: strengthening textbook development and subsidizing production so that all students have access to high-quality, affordable books;- providing all classrooms with a standard set of instructional materials and improving teacher education and providing them with academic support.

Peace and Justice

Corruption. Inequality. Rights. What do all of these have in common? The answer is Nigeria. Nigeria is a candidate for every Global Goal yet one stands out above the rest. Peace and injustice. However Nigeria is putting a stop to it. We as a government have recognized these issues and we are going to implement solutions to these problems. Nigeria will no longer be known as “The country of misfortune”, we will make ourselves known as “The country of opportunity”.

Paragraph 2:  Peace and Justice effects Nigeria  economically due to Boko Haram’s attacks. Boko Haram has attacked aquacultural fields in the North causing Nigeria to lose money and it severely reduced cross-border trades with Cameroon, Chad, and Niger.

Paragraph 3:

Paragraph 4:

Paragraph 5:

In order to achieve the goal of peace and justice we as a government are going to create campaigns. One group for peace, and one group for justice. Our peace campaign will be called “Erase Terrorism” and the justice campaign will be called “Honesty is the Best Policy”. Our Erase Terrorism campaign is going to tackle the issue of Boko Haram. We understand that he is an issue but in order for Nigeria to become peaceful we must get rid of our biggest threat. Our Honesty is the Best Policy campaign will address the issue of injustice in our government. There have been problems lately with our presidents corrupting our government but with awareness we believe that we can turn things around. In our committee resolution we would like to propose 2 things. 1 is that we create a search party of sorts to find Boko Haram. We do not care if he is dead we just want him to be eliminated. The 2nd proposition is that we our president’s moves be monitored at all times. The USA has security guards everywhere the president goes and we believe that could be a great start. With the world’s help we can make Nigeria a “Country of opportunity”

Position_Paper_Israel_Section4

Israel is a growing and diverse country. It is known as the birthplace of religions, and is seen as holy land to many. Israel has had a number of conflicts in order to get where they are today. The country is continuing to grow in numbers and development but still has many problems that need to be solved. One of the main problems Israel has today is violence and lack of peace. Our main global goal is goal 16 which is to have peace, justice, and strong institutions.

Israel has a strong economy, which with peace could increase even more if we solve our goals. Out of 187 countries, Israel ranks 19th on the human development index. Israel is also classified as very highly developed. If we worked on peace and justice, we could easily move up the ranks of the HDI thanks to our then improved social activity and safety, allowing more people to express ideas that move Israel farther into the future. Israel has good relations/trade agreements with strong nations that have very good resources that we need and can use, if those trades weren’t jeopardized by possible theft, which can be fixed if we fix crime and strife. That war cost money leads to more debt, and more debt leads to an effect on the economy, which isn’t good, because money makes the world go round.

Innocent people are being killed and treated unfair because of their religion. Palestinian organizations killed and wounded hundreds of Israeli civilians. Specifically, since October 1st, 2015, 56 Palestinians have been killed. A wave of violence claims lives of Jews and Palestinians. Since September of 2000, 133 Israeli children have been killed while 2,065 Palestinian children were killed. Since September of 2000, 1,198 Israeli citizens have been killed while 9,151 Palestinians have been killed. That body count for both nations is too high. If we can end these attacks, then perhaps we can save hundreds or thousands of innocent lives, and can stop violence locally in regions and nationwide as well.

Peace and justice can be achieved through stronger laws and their enforcement. Stricter policies (such as increased police forces, stricter gun laws, and more) can be very influential to making peace. Increased police forces could attempt to stop attacks before the attackers harm innocent civilians, stricter gun laws could stop the amount of guns which stops violence from within the nation while also teaching children that guns aren’t okay to own and use. Enforcement of peace in other regions is also good. Israel spends about $16,446 on their military in 2011, according to the Guardian. If they enforced peace in Israel and surrounding regions, than perhaps the military funds wouldn’t be as high. Israel and Palestine could work out a compromise (although that’s a stretch, considering both’s leaders are very set on no turning back). No war in Israel, and the government can focus on other prospects with that amount of money.

Israel’s policies are trying to make peace with Iran. They have not successfully done that, but they are working on it. The reason they can not do that is because Israel’s leader wants to go by his rules. If Israel wants to live in a peaceful society, they need to take steps that will reduce tensions. Israel’s “dangerous violations” make it imperative for the Palestinians to go to the Security Council soon to seek a resolution calling for an Israeli withdrawal.

As the birthplace of many religions Israel is a very diverse country and has seen the effects of violence first hand. The country has seen the many negative effects of violence and knows the importance of peace. To accomplish the UN’s goal of peace there need to be stricter gun laws and more child protection laws. There also need to be increased police and military forces in order to enforce these laws. Without these laws implemented now goal 16 will never be achieved.

Position_Paper_Russia_Section4

Russia Position Paper

Russia is a country of great national identity, on the local stage, and the global stage. It is to the dismay of Russia that their economy is on a decline in growth. Over the last fifty years, the economy of Russia went from a huge booming industry, to a small almost non-existent industry compared to other developed countries, when the Soviet Union fell. That economic crisis has ended but now, a new decline is starting, with the sanctions against Russia that make it harder to trade with foreign nations. The Russian Delegates believe that there should be more internal industry, and infrastructure, so that under harsh times like those of today, Russia will not suffer, but will thrive just as it has before.

The addition of infrastructure, to move resources, along with the addition of subsidies to give to beginning businessmen, would grow the economy significantly. Russia has more potential than any other nation the world, with 20% of the world’s natural resource reserves, Russia could be a become of wealth for the whole world to see. Despite having only a medium sized population, and abundant resources, Russia’s GDP per capita is more comparable to Brazil’s than to other G20 members, like those of the euro zone. With the growth that Russia could see with the proper assistance, Russia could be the world’s largest economy, by GDP and GDP per capita.

Today many entrepreneurs do not have the resources and opportunities to start and sustain a business, resulting in Russia’s low internal industries. The loss of the Ruble value has caused Russian banks to become more restrictive towards giving loans to startup. Countries such as Japan, The United States, Australia, Albania, Iceland, Ukraine, and Montenegro have sanctions that restrict trade between themselves and Russia. This limits the growth and expansion of Russian industries. The lack of thriving small businesses has caused GDP growth to decline by 4.6 percent from 2014-2015. The Russian delegates believe that this wrong. Every citizen should have the opportunity to strive to create something great. Entepanurs should have the resources to create, enlarge, and preserve their businesses. This task can only be achieved with innovative entrepreneurs and support from countries in the UN.

The growth of internal industries can have a significant impact in politics. Today the Russian economy is primarily centered around the production of oil and natural gas. The future growth of startup can make industry more diverse and expand the Russian economy. This affects legislation towards labor, taxes, and economics. Job production will affect the public’s view of issues and influences the type of people they vote into office. Furthermore the enlargement of internal industries can grow Russia’s Gross Domestic Product which provides more national income. The more money the Russian government has the more money they can spend to improve the wellbeing of citizens in the country.

The delegates of Russia have seen that small and medium enterprises have started to grow. This is good for the country’s economy because it enables more money to come in from product sales. Since these enterprises have started it is easier to get local goods into rural areas where there might not be any markets or stores. These small enterprises have not been able to thrive yet though and make lots of money since they have started. Products that contain wheat have had it’s price reduced so than people who don’t have enough money it could be more affordable and make the economy increase in sales within the country.

The government believes that if people were given a loan then it will increase our GDP and let the economy grow. Also gain the trust of other countries back and lift the sanctions and also start trading with them again by gaining their trust one way or another. If another country is in need of something and we have what they want and they have what we need we could help them and let them become our ally so then trade could be an option with us once again.

Position_Paper_Mexico_Section4

No poverty, the first Global Goal is an essential part of allowing the citizens of Mexico to achieve sustainability. In the past years, the country of Mexico has been plagued with the issue of poverty leaving it in need of food, shelter, water, clothing, and medical attention.

Poverty contributes to the overall advancement of Mexico’s economic power. The labor force of Mexico consists of a high number of children, an estimated amount of 1.1 million youths work to help provide for their family. Even with their help, the population still struggles to meet their basic necessities. More than half (52.3%) of the population is below the poverty line; the estimated minimum amount of income needed to be able to provide the basic necessities to life. Along with most of the population being below the poverty line, the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita for the citizens of Mexico is low in comparison to the world, leaving it in 92nd place. The average household makes the equivalent of $17,900.

The citizens of Mexico struggle with the amount of people that are left homeless every day. The Crude Death Rate (CDR) has increased 5% per 1,000 people due to more civilians left on the street, and less exposure to resources. With the death rate and the amount of people below the poverty line so high, there is less immigration into Mexico, and more emigration into the United States. This causes more illegal immigration into foreign countries. Many people resort to selling illegal items to provide for themselves and their families.

The black market is a common place where deals go down and with over 12 million mexicans working without any social security which makes people exploit them and pay them less than minimum wage which fuels the poverty and with the government not doing anything about it, it’s impossible to fix.

No poverty, is the first global goal. Mexico is struggling to have their basic necessities, and more than half of the population is below the poverty line. The citizens of Mexico struggle with the amount of people that are homeless. And the CDR has increased. So we decided that Mexico is in dire need of sustainability in the first Global Goal.

1st paragraph:

In the last couple of years Syria has been having problems with war, health, and their economy. “When Syria had a big civil war they had a huge economy crisis.” They almost got out of that. Then ISIS invaded Syria and the economy crashed again. According the the restrictions of ISIS, health is not something that matters. Well, it does matter. We cannot give any people medications or anything because ISIS is controlling us.

2nd paragraph (economically):

Syria is paying a lot to fund this war against ISIS and the rebels in our country. Paying for weapons and healing the wounded is a large cost. If this war was ended Syria could spend money on things more important to the Syrian government and regain strength.

3rd paragraph (morally):

ISIS is influencing the lives of people in many ways. They convince people not to do things by giving out false facts. For example ISIS telling Syrian people that the Americans have poisoned the polio vaccine and if you take it you won’t be able to have kids. They persecute other religions and ethnic groups like christians and muslims. Thousands have died in this war with ISIS and the rebels in our country. The overall morality of the Syrian government is negatively affected by ISIS and this complicated civil war.

4th paragraph(politically):

The rebels in Syria, known as the Free Syrian Army (FSA), was formed in August 2011. They are trying to tear down the Syrian government. We have tried numerous efforts to stop them such as air raids, but their reckless behavior continues. Not only is there a power struggle between Syria and the FSA, but also between Syria and ISIS who is trying to gain control.

5th paragraph:

Asad want to end the war. If they do, after that they will  use their russian ally to fight terrorism. After they are done with war, the country will be little peaceful. Next step they will take is taking terrorism groups out The Kremlin says it is acting on the request of the Syrian government to help combat IS militants – who have seized parts of Syria and Iraq – and other designated terrorist groups.. In end they need to take foreigners out from syria . Then Syria will become safe and peaceful country.

6th paragraph:

As a conclusion to this propution we the Syrian Government want to stop the war and to fight terrorism in Syria. Just like the terrorist group ISIS. Our country wants to work on global goal 16. Which is peace and justice. We want to in syria by stopping the war that has created “over 12 million refugees and has killed over 220,000 people” . While doing that will help us with our other goals for Syria.

Position_Paper_Israel_Section3

Earl Cotton, Josh Chevez, John Marshall, and Michael Ramos

The country of Israel has been at war with the palestinians since 1948. Israel has been trying to get peace and justice with the palestinians. The war has been putting Israel farther behind other countries by making our poverty rate higher than other developed countries at 20.9%. This is also making the hunger rate higher and lowering the GDP by almost 4% since 2014. There has been 20,093 soldiers dead and 75,00 wounded. Then there were 100,00 are considered disabled veterans. Enough is enough and it is time to work towards Global Goal 16 peace and justice.

This impacts Israel economically by, people getting locked away and are not able to help the economy. The people that are locked away can’t help by getting jobs to increase the economy. That also lowers the rate that the employees are paid for the minimum wage. It also gets people fired from the careers that they are employed to which lowers the economy more often. The reason why people are getting unemployed from jobs because products aren’t being produced, this leads to an unemployment rate 4.9%. This mainly impacting the bigger business at a higher rate and communities.

Morally in the communities the people are being separated more. The soldiers are trying to retrieve people behind bars on the palestinian side. The war affects the citizens by making it inequality between each other. Citizens are being separated from family and can not contribute to the society. Citizens are dying during the battles that are going on in the war. Some of the effects from the war are affecting Israel politically.

Politically the war with palestinians is making Israel’s poverty rate higher and making them look bad. The palestinians are part of Israel’s population so it raises the poverty rate. Also it affects the hunger rate that is in Israel. Then it affects the rate of inequality to make it increase so it makes Israel look bad. The poverty rate would be 20.4% during the war and it will be increasing.

So far the country of israel has only tried to negotiate in the 70’s but those negotiations have failed. So now the country should take a stand and show we are the stronger force in this situation. Although that is only if we can’t negotiate new terms. But if all else fails Israel will hve to show that they have the upper hand.

Israel should start negotiating with the palestinians. If Israel does not start negotiating with palestinians the war will get worse. The war has been affecting Israel economically because the people that are locked away can’t contribute to the economy. Also it has been affecting the citizens morally. How it has been affecting them morally because of the separation of families and friends. Then the war affects them politically by raising the level of poverty.
