Position Paper
As a country Syria became independent in 1946, but soon experienced military coups. Then Syria united with Egypt, but split to form the Syrian Arab Republic. Recently under the leader Bashar al-Assad, there recently seems to be unrest over the emergency laws we installed. This has caused the government to frequently clash with oppositionists over the recent years causing a loss of both the country and it’s people. This is only made worse with the sanctions placed by the U.S and other countries. The Syrian delegation believe that the Global Goal sixteen, which advocates for peaceful communities, should be pursued. By getting rid of these oppositionist and terrorist groups, Syria can reconstruct the country for its people.
As a result of the desolation that ISIS and other terror groups have caused, the economy of Syria is not what it used to be. The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, otherwise known as ISIS, has taken control of over 12 Syrian cities and 13,000 square miles (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/08/11/isis-iraq-numbers_n_5659239.htm) in Northern and Eastern Syria and Iraq. Such cities include, Raqqa, and Abu Kamal in Syria and the capital of Iraq, Baghdad, is in ISIS controlled area (http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-24179084). The main way ISIS gets their money is by the oil fields in their controlled areas. They collect it and sell it back to the Syrian government. The possession of potential economic areas is very detrimental to the well-being of Syria. The GDP of Syria as of 2011 is $107.6 billion with 11.9% of people below the poverty line in 2006, according to the CIA Factbook (https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/sy.html ). The GDP was $110.1 billion in 2010, proving that the war caused destruction has lowered the total worth value and production of the country.
The possibility of advancement upon other important Syrian cities like Damascus, the capital, could be very destructive on not just the economy, but the entire country itself.
While responsible for the damaged buildings and other constructs, these oppositionists also possessing a negative social aspect of our country. Thus by eradicating any trace of these oppositionists we not only can we be closer to our chosen global goal we can also provide beneficial social impact on our citizens and even other nations as well. For example one such oppositionist groups; Isis has had a negative impact on our country socially. According to (http://www.washingtoninstitute.org/policy-analysis/view/isis-iraq-and-the-war-in-syria-military-outlook) Isis can convince other oppositionists in our country to expand and continue their destructive ways. In other words Isis is not only posing a direct problem to us but is rapidly changing the atmosphere and nature of our country. This only more evident when discovering the support that ISIS receives. This only becomes more evident when according to the week (http://www.theweek.co.uk/islamic-state/64120/how-many-foreign-fighters-have-joined-islamic-state) by 2015, 600 Britains alone have joined Isis. Furthermore the social views these oppositionists hold destroys the harmonic and jubilant dream of peace and equality. According to CNN (http://www.cnn.com/2015/06/11/opinions/bangura-isis-treatment-women/) based on age and sexual activity, women are sold like cattle, impeded by the cumbersome and oppressive shackles of fear and slavery. The worst part is that this is just one of the horrific and overbearing views that ISIS and by extension their supporters encourage. Another view they support is the preconception that Shia are heretics and meant to be slaughtered. These types of view are the very views that are our ultimate enemy in the way of peace: superiority. This is only made worse by one incident in which 679 Shia’s were shot leaving only a handful alive. As a result the (http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/aug/25/isis-ethnic-cleansing-shia-prisoners-iraq-mosul)
ambassadors of Syria believe the views and the actions of Isis and other like minded rebels must see the error of their ways in order to pave the unyielding road of peace for generations to come.
Thirdly ISIS is being financed by other countries such as Saudi Arabia. Apparently they were funded by Obama administration according to http://shoebat.com/2015/02/20/isis-leader-admits-funded-obama-administration/. Also ISIS has recruiters being paid to have people join ISIS for $600. Furthermore ISIS was paid a large amount of money to release hostages in France giving them more money and by extension power. ISIS is also trying to make a conservative state. This can pose a problem for Syrians due to our decreasing GDP and covering more money can lead to a higher increase in poverty and malnourishment. If we conserve too much then what will be left? Moreover Isis has harsh policies towards others when it come to different religions. Isis has shown in numerous encounters that they will kill in the name of their religion. This core principals eradicates the warm ray of hope and the just scales of equality we strive for. There are christians syrians in Syria. Lastly we plead to other countries to halt any funding to ISIS immediately. Isis is in war with Syria.Their conflicts began in 2011 according to this article http://theislamicmonthly.com/syrian-alawites-their-history-their-future/.
Despite the oppositionists causing a major block in the path of peace we have been opposing them unyieldingly. According to independant U.K President Bashar al-Assad’s has (http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-east/syria-conflict-president-assad-finally-turns-on-isis-as-government-steps-up-campaign-against-9679480.html) already been implementing ways to foil the oppositionists. This includes airstrikes against the ISIS headquarters. However other countries such as the U.S have helped us in our efforts. In fact according to new york times due to milita sent by the U.S to help prevent (http://www.nytimes.com/2015/08/10/world/middleeast/syria-turkey-islamic-state-kurdish-militia-ypg.html?_r=0) Isis, the U.S has become our biggest ally. This leads us to hope that we can continue this good relationship with the united states and our allies. We also hope to gain support from other countries that are striving for peace and justice such as Nigeria and create outstanding relations with countries we may have complications with.
The country and delegation of Syria believes that with the support of other delegations of the United Nations, we should take the offensive and face ISIS and other terror groups head on. The world cannot allow them to take Syrian lands or people any longer. Without the eradication of these groups, Syria cannot pursue other goals that would mean better lives for its people. Secure communities and innovation and infrastructure come after people can return to their homes with confidence that they won’t be shot by an extremist group.
We ask the other delegations to support Syria and the battle against opposition groups with monetary help and political backing. Syria cannot be left on its own. Help and collaboration are essential factors to creating a safe and prosperous country for the Syrians and others across the globe.
